I think Shaun has brought to light what i like to call a Hobson's Choice (either this or that, can't difficult or rather very difficult to get both). The right Attitude and Aptitude is the sign of a true leader. Technical prowess is something you are passionate about (that's we went to shool to get a degree :) right ?!) personal attributes may be inculcated through leadership training etc.
Good discussion!

Personal attributes of course!

You may be the most technically proficient person in your field but unless you have the right personal attributes, you'll never get your points and ideas across.

A lot of academics fall into the technical expert category and when faced with a practical, real-life issue they struggle.
