Six Sigma escapes from the factory floor

In a world where even surfer dudes can solve the secrets of the universe it pays to be slightly optimistic about non-standard applications of Six Sigma.
Six Sigma has certainly been muted for use in some strange ways which are a far cry from its manufacturing roots. How about sifting through thousands of data points to identify possible terrorists or targets of terrorism? In the counterterrorism business, there is no such thing as 100%, but then again neither is perfection achievable in business. The CIA Director called the intelligence breakdown relating to Sept. 11 an “error” that exposed weaknesses in the process. He used the word “customer” for the recipients of intelligence. This is Six Sigma terminology creep I think ….

Government Leader of the Year Mayor Graham Richard of Fort Wayne pioneered city government’s use of business practices Lean and Six Sigma, which focus on eliminating waste and team approaches to developing higher quality standards. The use of these techniques resulted in many noticeable improvements. Specific turnaround included more efficient trash services and timely street repairs, not to mention $27 million in taxpayer savings and a crime rate at an all-time low.

Yes, it seems like Six Sigma is getting out of the shop floor and making a difference in other disciplines.
